Case Study 8: FSC Margam - Analysis
PASTE Analysis
The Paste design tool was used to build up a comprehensive list of haves and needs for this site. This was done because there are significant resources on site already which must be used in the design, so was a means to capture much of the information, and also think about how the garden might be used - e.g. different events Input Output Analysis
This tool was used to examine the major elements of the system and how well outputs from one element served inputs from another. |
Overlays
Sector overlays showed that this site is very exposed to animals (particularly deer), and south-westerly winds, indicatingthat a wind-break would be necessary. The drain overlay showed the final position of drains on site and was crucial for placement. . Function Element Analysis
This tool was used to analyse the elements in the system and which functions they fulfilled. Design Exercise: Flow Diagrams The purpose of this exercise is to analyse and improve how well your design flows given where you have decided to locate the various elements of the design.
Steps
How long will this task take and how far will I have to walk? Is it likely to be neglected because it is an arduous task, takes too long or I have to walk too far? Are there any heavy items I need to carry more than a few metres? How will I transport these? Can I improve the efficiency of the design by relocating things so they are nearer each other? If the answer is yes, do this on your map and reconsider the above questions.
